Our Experience Was Less Than Satisfactory
We didn't have a good experience, mainly because our counselor Marie wasn't attentive enough. Empowerly does care and is trying to make things right. However, since our child is now in college, it's uncertain if more time is needed, especially as no credits were offered. I probably wouldn't recommend their services. They did mention they would assist with transfer applications if our daughter chooses to, but that's two years away, and it's unclear if they'll follow through when the time comes. So, I'm giving a neutral rating. If they do fulfill their promises, I'll update my review to a more positive one.

Exceptional Counselor and Support Beyond Expectations!**
Ms. Lara Andersen, my counselor, assisted me in ways I never could have imagined. Before starting the admissions process, I was dealing with a family emergency and negative influences that drastically lowered my grades. When I decided to pursue Aerospace Engineering, I was struggling with three C’s in my AP STEM courses during my junior year—it was a tough period for sure. Prior to joining Empowerly, my previous college admission counselor dismissed me, even mocking my situation and advising me to drop the courses where I was getting C’s, especially halfway through the year. Empowerly, and particularly Ms. Andersen, were like lifelines for me. Ms. Andersen was incredibly approachable and supported me not only through the college admissions journey but also helped me manage my personal challenges. I had a hard time with tests, never scoring above three on any AP Exams, and my SAT score was 1240, which led me to choose test-optional applications. Ms. Andersen helped me organize my thoughts and develop essays that got me accepted into schools I never expected. She never judged me or made me feel bad about my grades; instead, she was always encouraging. Even when I was stressed, she reminded me that it was my responsibility to present my application in a way that truly reflected who I am and my values. She also made it clear that she wouldn’t be micromanaging me— it was up to me to ensure my essays were the best they could be before submitting them. While Empowerly as a company has its drawbacks (I strongly advise against investing in the Ad Coms), Ms. Andersen ensured that I was fully supported throughout the admissions process. One downside I noticed is that the company charges a high fee for Adcoms, which are mock admissions reviews, but they don’t provide meaningful feedback. In contrast, my counselor offered far better insights than those reviews. My advice to anyone considering Empowerly is to join as early as possible. It’s important to find out whether your counselor is a good fit before they help you with the college admissions process. Starting early gives you the chance to understand how helpful your counselor is and if they are willing to go the extra mile to help you succeed. Honestly, without my amazing counselor, I wouldn’t have received the offers I did from the colleges I applied to. If you’ve faced similar struggles with your grades and are determined to get into your dream school, I highly recommend booking an appointment with Empowerly and requesting Ms. Lara Andersen. She has the experience and dedication to ensure her students achieve their goals if they’re willing to put in the work and time. I’m now committed to the UCI Samueli School of Engineering as an Aerospace Engineering major, and my parents are incredibly proud. I couldn’t be happier and owe a lot to my counselor for helping me discover what I’m truly capable of.

Our journey with Empowerly was even better than we anticipated. Our high school senior daughter tends to be quite independent and often pushes back against her mother's suggestions. Nonetheless, she was determined to attend a leading university. She met with two counselors, both exceptional in their own right, but ultimately felt a stronger rapport with Xander and decided to work with him. Xander struck the perfect balance between patience and empathy, while also ensuring she stayed on track with her essay revisions. Through his guidance, she discovered Boston University and developed a passion for International Relations, a program they are ranked 17th nationally. As a parent who attended college in the late '80s and early '90s, I was completely unaware of how to navigate the modern college application process. Things have changed—A LOT. I felt lost and struggled to help my daughter, especially given the challenging admissions cycle for the class of 2027. After speaking with numerous college counselors, I discovered that Empowerly offered the most effective approach for this overwhelming task. They paired my daughter with Mandy Chen, her personal counselor, perfectly matching her intended major and interests. Empowerly empowered my daughter to take the lead. She put in the necessary work while they guided her through the process in the most comprehensive way possible. My daughter arranged Zoom meetings, initially on a weekly basis. Together, they created a strong list of schools, including five safeties, five targets, and three reaches. Mandy assisted her in developing essay and supplemental essay topics, building a resume, and ensuring she took the ACT multiple times. She focused primarily on southern schools, many of which had made the SAT/ACT mandatory. Mandy also helped manage my daughter’s timeline to keep her on track for submitting applications by the necessary deadlines, especially for Early Action schools. Ultimately, Florida State University became my daughter’s dream school. I used to view it as a safety, but as I mentioned, things have changed drastically! FSU was actually one of her reach schools, along with the University of Florida and the University of Georgia. I’m delighted to share that my out-of-state daughter was accepted into her dream school! What once seemed impossible became a reality. Despite FSU having only a 24% acceptance rate this year, my daughter defied the odds. Her grades, resume, extracurricular activities, ACT score, and the gentle guidance from Mandy Chen and Empowerly made the experience much less stressful. Not Satisfied with This Service
The two stars are for the second counselor I was paired with, who was generally nice to work with and provided some helpful feedback on my essays. However, I signed up for the premium package expecting strategic guidance on selecting colleges, approaching applications, and boosting my chances of getting into a top-tier school, but none of that happened with Empowerly. Initially, I was assigned a counselor who was a current college student—pleasant but lacking strategic advice. At one point, he forgot about a scheduled meeting, and we had to request a new counselor. My new counselor, supposedly more experienced, was also nice but primarily offered specific feedback on essays and answered my questions without focusing on improving my admission prospects. The advice was often generic and unclear. He frequently seemed to read the essays during our meetings instead of reviewing them beforehand. He rarely replied to my emails. All the guidance I received here was already provided by my school counselor. The admission committee's review of my application contradicted the counselor's advice, which added to my confusion. Contrary to what was advertised, working with Empowerly did not enhance my chances of getting into higher-ranked schools—I was admitted to the schools I would have without their help. Additionally, there was no personal touch from my counselor. To this day, I haven't heard from him regarding my college admission results. Empowerly's services were greatly misrepresented during their sales presentations.

Initially, it seemed like a solid choice and did help me stay organized with my application deadlines. My counselor was pleasant, but there were issues with communication, and she was frequently late to our meetings. Additionally, the service wasn’t worth the cost, as they recommended schools I wasn’t interested in. I didn’t gain admission to any unexpected institutions, and the essay editing lacked depth regarding the different types of application essays needed. The Admissions Committee guidance was also quite generic and not very useful. Overall, I understand their intentions, but I was left feeling unimpressed.

Lacking Proper Time Management
The counselor was friendly and supportive, but our primary reason for choosing a college counselor was to help our son stay “on track” and complete numerous essays during the summer before the school year began. Unfortunately, the counselor left it to him to schedule his own appointments, resulting in too few meetings and no essays finished before school started. Consequently, he had to rush through his essays and applications, submitting them almost at the last minute. While the essay feedback was somewhat helpful, I'm unsure if it was worth the investment. We selected Empowerly over other college counselors mainly because of the advertised summer internship opportunity. Although he did obtain a summer internship, the company ended it early, so he didn’t gain much from it (which wasn’t Empowerly’s fault). Our main objective was to establish effective time and project management for our son, allowing us to stay uninvolved. Unfortunately, this goal was not met.

Proceed with Caution When Choosing Empowerly
My rating would be significantly higher if a few aspects were improved: 1. The main problem I faced with Empowerly was the unclear session timing. When purchasing a package, the number of sessions is listed (for example, 18 sessions in the basic package). However, it wasn’t clearly explained how each session was timed. This lack of clarity led me to believe I was buying more sessions, when in reality, I was purchasing time. My account went into the negative without any notification, leaving me unaware of the situation. While the details are a bit complicated, the overall process was confusing and lacked transparency. 2. The counselor assigned to me seemed overwhelmed with too many students, preventing them from providing a personalized experience. The guidance I received was only somewhat useful for general college questions that could easily be answered by a school counselor or a quick online search. 3. Empowerly's internship program, which they highlight as a major feature, was entirely ineffective for me. The entire process was tangled, and the partner companies appeared just as confused about the procedures. In summary, if I could do it all over again, I would avoid Empowerly.
